Some Plastic Packaging Will Be Banned From 2030

According to the German "Frankfurt Allgemeine Zeitung" website reported on March 4, the European Union has partially banned plastic packaging from 2030.

The EU must significantly increase the amount of recyclable packaging in the future. On the evening of the 4th, negotiators from the European Parliament and EU countries reached an agreement in Brussels. The European Parliament has also announced that certain single-use packaging will be banned from 2030, such as packaging of unprocessed fresh fruit and vegetables or individual packaging of sugar. The goal is to gradually reduce packaging waste in the EU by at least 15% by 2040 compared to 2018.

The negotiations are based on the European Commission's 2022 legislative proposal, which still needs to be formally adopted by member states and the European Parliament.

According to the latest data from Eurostat, the EU produced 188.7 kg of packaging waste per capita in 2021. The figures vary widely across the EU - Croatia produces around 74kg of packaging waste per person, while Ireland produces around 246kg.
